| Steel is heavy and aluminum is expensive. | Save 1000 lb/rig relative to steel and 380 lb/rig relative to aluminum. | |
| Metals are inferior in shock-loading. | Much less runout than steel. | |
| Steel can have grain growth, rust and HAZ at welds | Molded wheels eliminate corrosion. | |
![]() | Wheels are indispensable and for centuries they have been wood or metal. Now, following technology, composite wheels are proving lighter and stronger. Compression-molded wheels of fiber-reinforced resin have additional benefits. Painting doesn’t matter since color goes all the way through. Also, as bonded polymers, these (made in the U.S.) wheels resist corrosion from every type spray. To be specific, we make the 22.5 x 8.25 Unimount wheel that’s most popular on Class 8 trucks. Relative to steel, it takes 1000 lb from an 18-wheeler and it’s also lighter than aluminum. |
